बिजली महादेव का अपना ही महत्व व इतिहास है। माना जाता है की बिजली महादेव का पहाड़ एक सांप यानी नाग का रूप है । जैसे ही भगवान् शिव ने उस सांप का वध किया वो सांप इस पहाड़ में तब्दील हो गया । मान्यता है की इस नगर में कुलंत नाम का राक्षस होता था । भोलेनाथ के इस शिव लिंग के अस्तित्व में आने से ही कुल्लू अस्तित्व में आया । ऐसी मान्यता है की इस नगर में कुलान्त नाम का राक्षस था जो की रूप बदलने में भी माहिर था और बहुत ही शक्तिशाली राक्षस था कुलान्त ने अजगर का रूप इसलिए धारण किया था की इस घाटी में रहने वाले लोग इस घाटी को छोड़ दें और उसका पूरी घाटी में अकेले का राज हो । और उसने व्यास नदी का पानी रोकने के लिए इसमें कुंडली मार के बैठ गया । इसके पीछे उसका उद्देश्य यह था कि यहां रहने वाले सभी जीव-जंतु पानी में डूब कर मर जाएं । यह देखकर भगवान् भोलेनाथ क्रोधित हुए और वो जानते थे की अगर क्रोध में उन्होंने अजगर को मार दिया तो अजगर के साथ यहाँ के लोग भी मर जायेंगे । इसलिए भगवान् भोलेनाथ अजगर के पास पहुंचे और उसके कान में कहा की उसकी पूंछ में आग लग गयी है और जैसे ही वो पीची मुड़ा तो भोलेनाथ ने कुलान्त पर त्रिशूल से वार कर दिया और कुलान्त यही पर मारा गया । कुलान्त के मरते ही उसका शरीर एक विशालकाय पहाड़ के रूप में तब्दील हो गया और उसका शरीर धरती के जितने क्षेत्र में फैला था वो पूरा का पूरा क्षेत्र पर्वत में परिवर्तित हो गया । और आज उसी पर्वत पर भगवान् शिव का ये मंदिर मौजूद है जिसे बिजली महादेव के नाम से जाना जाता है । यह भी मान्यता है की भोलेनाथ लोगों को बचाने के लिए इस बिजली को अपने ऊपर गिरवाते हैं। इसी वजह से भगवान शिव को यहां बिजली महादेव कहा जाता है। यह मंदिर खराहल घाटी की छोटी पर स्तिथ है और हर मौसम में दूर-दूर से लोग यहाँ बिजली महादेव के दर्शन करने आते हैं।
कुल्लू का पुराना नाम कुलान्त-पीट है ! जिसका अर्थ है संसार की सभ्यता का अंतिम पड़ाव !
